Sadly, computer security is an ever-increasing problem.  Here are links to some useful sites.

bulletCERT Coordination Center
bulletThe CERT Coordination Center - for Computer Emergency Response Team - coordinates response to security assaults in the United States.
bulletDNS Stuff
bulletReverse lookups, IP lookups, etc.
bulletDisk Recovery Tools
bulletPart of computer security is being able to recover data that are lost.  NTFS.com produces a series of simple, powerful tools for recovering from unexpected failures:  undeleting files; partition recovery; and recovering Windows XP/NT local administrator passwords.
bulletDShield
bulletDistributed Intrusion Detection System - The state of system intrusions across the internet
bulletFrisk International
bulletFrisk manufacturers F-prot, one of the world's leading antivirus programs.  Here's where to find out what's going on.
bulletGibson Research Corporation
bulletSteve Gibson is a serious programmer, with a strong interest in security.  He makes available several tools.
bulletIdentity Theft
bulletIt's one of the nation's fastest growing crimes.  While there are many private sites with information on it, here are three official government sites.
bullet US Department of Justice
bullet US Postal Service (Postal Inspectors)
bulletUS Federal Trade Commission
bulletInternet Storm Center
bulletOperated by the SANS Institute - The state of malicious traffic on the internet.
bulletIP - What is my IP
bulletThis site does what it says, quickly and simply
bulletKill Disk
bulletSometimes you need to completely erase a harddisk drive.  Kill Disk will do this on any computer that will boot if you use a DOS boot disk.  It offers several levels.  The freeware version is probably adequate just to "clean" a drive.  The professional version can do some very heavy duty cleaning.
bulletMcAfee Stinger
bulletThis is a stand-alone application, downloadable for free from McAfee.  It is not an antivirus program, but is useful for dealing with an infected system.  To quote McAfee:  Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system.
bulletNigerian Bank Scam
bulletSure -- you know you're trustworthy, and that's why you received an anonymous e-mail with poor English, asking you to provide all your banking information so someone you never met could provide you with US$20 Million!  Read more about it here.  It's called a "419 scam" after the (unenforced) provision in the Nigerian criminal code.  See also the pamphlet Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud from the US State Department Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
bullet NIST Reference:  An Introduction to Computer Security
bulletThis handbook provides assistance in securing computer-based resources (including hardware, software, and information) by explaining important concepts, cost considerations, and interrelationships of security controls. It illustrates the benefits of security controls, the major techniques or approaches for each control, and important related considerations
bulletPassword Safe
bulletA major weakness many people have is weak passwords.  Strong passwords are difficult to track and use.  Password Safe was developed by Bruce Schneier, a serious cryptographer.  It is now being develped further through Sourceforge.  The last version Bruce developed is available here.
bulletAnti-Phishing Working Group
bulletA group dedicated to preventing "phishing" - the mass distribution of 'spoofed' e-mail messages with return addresses, links, and branding which appear to come from banks, insurance agencies, retailers or credit card companies. These fraudulent messages are designed to fool the recipients into divulging personal authentication data such as account usernames and passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc.
bullet Directions to report phishing attacks here.
bulletScam Listing
bulletA website listing details of many web scams
bulletSecunia Software Inspector
bulletHow do if all of the software on your Windows machine is patched?  Microsoft Windows Update only updates Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office?  Secunia offers a scanner (online as well as a personal version for free) that checks your software against their database, lets you know what has security vulnerabilities, and then gives you a link to the patch to repair it.
bulletSneakemail
bulletCreate one-time use e-mails, so you can track (and avoid) spam.  It comes in two versions, freeware and low-cost.
bulletSymantec Security Response
bulletSymantec is one of the premier antivirus manufacturers.  Here's where to find out what's going on.
bulletVirus Database
bulletSearchable virus database from F-Secure
