References for an open source operating system
(and it's really big on logos!) |
| Some things if you're only used to Windows. Microsoft merges several
functions into one package, that you have to buy together. In Windows,
the operating system (Windows) and the desktop (Windows) are packaged
together and called the same thing. In Linux, the operating system is
one thing (Linux), and you can load whatever desktop you want (for example,
KDE or Gnome), or even work from the command line, "the console."
Linux is "open-source," but many of the vendors sell their version of it,
charging for the work they've done (burning it onto CDs, provding tech
support, etc.). |
